It’s Hip to Drink at Square Beans!
By: Bridget Adams-Ely
When Kelli and Walt Geminn moved to Collierville seven years ago, Kelli felt the Town Square was fabulous, yet missing something. She often told her friends that the Square really needed a coffee shop. (Hint! Hint!)
Yes, she secretly hoped someone would pick up on her hints and open one so she could enjoy having coffee on the Historic Town Square. After much time and many hints unnoticed, Geminn decided to take on the challenge herself. With the help of her husband Walt, they opened Square Beans Coffee Shop on the Historic Collierville Square in 2008.
Since its opening Square Beans has been a tremendous success. The Geminns have a delicious menu including many gourmet coffees, coffee beans, pastries, smoothies and even sandwiches. Many of the recipes include local produce purchased at Collierville’s Farmers Market on Washington Street.
Square Beans has a warm, inviting vibe and feels the way a hometown coffee shop should. It’s filled with good conversation, laughter and the soft shuffling of newspapers in the background. Customers always receive a friendly welcome -- Geminn takes pride in the fact that she knows most of her customers by name. If by chance she doesn’t know their name, she definitely knows their drink. She typically starts making her regulars’ favorite drink the moment she sees them approach the front door.
Geminn is absolutely thrilled with the entire experience of opening and running Collierville’s only independently run coffee shop and hopes to open a second Square Beans in the next five years.
Square Beans is definitely worth a visit whether you want to grab a quick cup of coffee and pastry, or you want a relaxing place to enjoy reading a book. There are even live bands and musicians who perform weekly, for those who prefer a little less quiet.
Square Beans is located at 103 North Center St. Their web address is www.squarebeans.com.
